Convergent Boundaries
Convergent plate boundaries are locations where lithospheric plates are moving towards one another. The plate collisions that occur in these areas can produce earthquakes, volcanic activity and crustal deformation
Divergent Boundaries
Divergent boundaries are areas in which plates move away from each other. The majority of these divergent boundaries are located along the crests of the mid-oceanic ridges. As the plates separate, fractures occur which are immediately filled with molten rock that up wells from the asthenosphere. This hot material cools and creates a new seafloor.
Plate tectonics
The theory of plate tectonics is the paradigm of the geological sciences. It explains the occurrence of earthquakes and volcanoes, the distribution of rock types, the widespread occurrence of organisms, etc., on Earth. The study of plate tectonics that deals with the processes by which the lithosphere (plate) is moved (tectonics) laterally over the asthenosphere.
Metamorphic Rock
Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have been altered by heat and/or pressure. As they are derived from previously existing igneous, sedimentary or even metamorphic rock, their appearance is variable. They are identified by the types of minerals they contain and their texture.
